Resumen:
Uveitis is a term applied to a wide range of conditions characterizedby intraocular inflammation. Corticosteroids are the first line therapyfor patients with uveitis, but their side effects highlight the need fornew therapeutic approaches. Our previous studies demonstratedthat Lactobacillus plantarum CRL 759 supernatant (LplS) was ableto decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines production in LPS-stimulatedARPE-19 cells (human retinal pigment epithelium cell line). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of LplS in a murineexperimental model of uveitis induced by endotoxin.L. plantarum was cultured in DMEM medium at 37ºC 5% CO2; LplSwas obtained by filtration on 0.22μm membranes. To induce uveitis,130 μg LPS was injected subcutaneously into C57BL/6 mice.LplS was administered as drops and Prednisolone (P) was used asanti-inflammatory control. The mice were divided into six groups:LPS (LPS injection +PBS drops); LPS+LplS (LPS injection +LplSdrops); LPS+P (LPS injection +prednisolone drops) and controlgroups treated with PBS, LplS or P drops and a PBS injection.Twenty four hours after stimulation, the mice were sacrificed. Theocular inflammation was assessed by slit lamp microscopy and clinicalscores were determined. From each mouse, one eye was usedfor collecting aqueous humor (AqH) and the other was enucleatedfor histopathological evaluation. Total proteins, TNF-α and leukocyteinfiltration were determined in AqH.The clinical score of mice treated with LplS was significantly lowerthan the LPS group (p
