Resumen:
Passionate positions advocating the use of authentic materials in the language classroom proliferate. Only if materials are authentic will quick and efficient learning be enhanced.  So the belief goes. However, tenuous and unfounded assertions support this view. The aim of this paper is to inspect the notion of authenticity as a reliable indicator of effectiveness in teaching materials.  An alternative framework in which to re-examine the issue is proposed.
