"A Framework for the Integration of Language and Culture in the Classroom.” Anales del XIV Encuentro ENPULI de Profesores Universitarios de Lengua Inglesa: pp.241-249.  Universidad Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, 1999. This paper explores the role of culture in language teaching. It is claimed that cultural awareness, unavoidable within a notion of communicative competence, is pedagogically and educationally relevant. Pedagogically, it enables learners to become communicatively competent.  Educationally, it offers a multi-dimensional perspective on experience. The impact of cultural features on the learners´ identity is explored. It is suggested that the integration of language and culture in the classroom is feasible and can be successfully implemented by means of a contrastive approach with lexical phrases as its foundation.
