Resumen:
Nature is an unlimited source of biologically active compounds. In recent years, the tendency to identify bioactives compounds with potential benefits in various health areas has increased exponentially, e.g., in the ophthalmological field. Resveratrol (RSV) is a polyphenol with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiangiogenic, healing, antimicrobial, neuroprotector, and antitumoral properties. A major drawback is its low aqueous solubility and chemical instability. In this sense, a large investment in research has been encouraged to solve these issues. In this context, nanotechnology acquires special prominence within the biomedical and pharmacological field, by generating a revolution around its potential application as therapeutic agents. The development of new generation nanocarriers involves strategies to improve the physicochemical limitations of bioactives compounds, such as RSV. Even more, nanotechnology redoubles the bet to overcome the obstacles imposed by the anatomy of the eye when performing topical or intraocular treatments. In summary, this chapter places special emphasis on the versatility of resveratrol nanocarriers, their interaction with ocular barriers, and their substantial impact on clinical ophthalmology for the treatment of different pathologies.
