The article's purpose is to leave to public discussion some of the questions arising from the methodological issues in school and immigration studies. In order to facilitate its interpretation, the paper introduces three aspects related to the research process -i.e. the context, the research object and the data-, while also considering the reflexivity of such process and its relationship with the researcher and the researched. Some further arguments are finally put forward to champion a type of research relying on the active participation of those subjects involved in the definition of goals and strategies, which would thus let the outcomes have an impact on social and educative practices.
