Institutional herbarium for education in pharmacobotany

A scientific collection of plants or part of them, dried, preserved, identified and accompanied by critical information such as the identity of the collector, place, date of collection and habitat constitute a herbarium which can be used for educational purposes. Thus, the aim of the National University of the Chaco Austral was stablish a herbarium for educational purposes in the Pharmacy career and other related careers. Recently, (June, 2021) an institutional herbarium called “Ing. Carlos Chifa” was created in honor to a retired professor of pharmacobotany of this university. This herbarium occupies a specific physical place in the institution and it has about five thousand copies of herbalized plant material and collections of different parts of plants such as seeds, fruits, roots and wood from America. It should be noted that the herbarium was registered in the Index Herbariorum belonging to the NYBG Steere Herbarium and constitutes a reference center for the region. In conclusion, the importance of the existence of a herbarium as a didactic tool in education of pharmacobotany within the Pharmacy career is highlighted, useful to study the plant diversity using the experience of collecting plants of the region in their environment and properly conditioning them.
