Resumen:
The municipality of Carabuco is located on the shores of Lake Titicaca. An ancient ?Indian town,? it was officially established in the sixteenth century under the Viceroyalty of Peru, within what is presently the Department of La Paz, Bolivia (fig. 1 MG¬_7600). The town church contains a series of paintings of the Novissimi that are among the most interesting works created in the region during this period in terms of both iconography and function. The four large-format canvases are signed by the painter José López de los Ríos. They were commissioned by José de Arellano, who served as the parish priest of Carabuco beginning in 1669. The paintings represent the final moments of earthly existence and the afterlife, i.e., The Last Judgment, Hell, Purgatory and Heaven.
