Resumen:
The aim of this work is to describe the algebraic ability of secondary school students in the resolution of equations, the relation between the analytic and graphic solutions, and the verification of the. This study is part of a wider research which investigates the genesisOF ALGEBRA at school, emphasizing its modeling character from a cognitiveand didactic perspective (Otero, 1998; Elichiribehety, Otero, 2001; Elichiribehety, Otero, Fanaro, 2002; Elichiribehety, 2002; Elichiribehety,Otero, Corica, 2003). In this paper, partial results are obtained from a paper-and-pencil test which, among other aspects, evaluated the analytic resolution of different kinds of equations throughout all the secondary school. In this opportunity, aspects concerning the work with linearequations are deepened; this work was carried out with 283 students, aged between 13 and 18, selected at random from three schools of the city of Tandil. When the survey was made, the students were attending the third quarter of year 2000. The results obtained would indicate us that students can perform a correct algebraic resolution of linear equations in a single unknown but they cannot deal with systems of linear equations and even less with the graphic resolution of linear equations in a single unknown as well as of systems of linear equations.
