Resumen:
PLA coating on Kraft papermaterials is very promising systems for the future improvement of food packaging. This eco-friendly biopolymer has potential environmental advantages overconventional synthetic paper coatings. In this context, this work wasfocused on: i) analyzing the physicochemical, thermal and microstructuralproperties of PLA films; ii) developing and studying multilayer systemsobtained by impregnation of Kraft paper with different layers of PLA solution;iii) evaluating the influence of PLA layers on the support cellulosicproperties The obtained results showed that the PLA coating improvespackaging material performance and hence the functional properties of the Kraftpaper. The impregnation of hygroscopic materials as theKraft paper with PLA solutionwas an alternative interesting to enhance water afinity properties allowing to obtain more hydrophobic matrices. The assembled materials attained wereheat-sealed. Furthermore, the useof PLA adds to potential food applications, a renewable resource valueobtained from sources agricultural. Thedesign of this multilayer support also allows itsextension to other media such as paperboard. Moreover, the addition of 4 or 5 layers favorably modified theassembled system properties. Increasing even further the number of PLA layers, system properties hardly underwent a significant improvement. Consequently, theselection of the number of PLA layers would be a response to a relationship ofcommitment between the increase in the cost and the enhancement of theproperties.
