Resumen:
This chapter is focus on geological hazard of the piedmont domain what is close related to historic natural disasters impacting on Mendoza city. More damaging events have been debris flows known locally as “aluviones” triggered by intense rainfall in Precordillera. This flood risk has been successfully controlled at present by engineering measures. On the other hand, active Quaternary faults with surface ruptures have been identified in the piedmont. These structures are related to a shallow seismicity and moderate magnitude earthquakes (Ms 3- 5). Herein, severe damages will be related to seismic wave amplification in alluvial fan material of piedmont. Moreover, liquefaction phenomena associated to fine grain soils with an upper water table (3 m deep) is advised. Fall of pyroclastic material affecting the piedmont and Mendoza city during violent eruptions of Cordillera volcanoes must not been underestimated as it has been documented in previous events.
