At the end of the Second World War, millionsof children and young people oppressed by poverty were living in Europe. Italy was a poorcountry with very high rates of illiteracy and unemployment. In 1947 the population withless than 15 years represented a third of the Italian population and the infant mortality rate was72.2 per thousand (number of deaths of children less than 1 year old per 1,000 live births) (Maurizio, 2011).
