Resumen:
This work has two goals. First, we present the short form (16-30 months) of the Inventario do Desenvolvemento de Habilidades Comunicativas (IDHC), the Galician version of the CDI. New normative data taken from 806 parents are given, as well as reliability scores and correlations with the complete version of the IDHC. Second, we explore the concurrent and predictive validity of both the complete and short version of the Galician IDHC. To that purpose, 42 children were longitudinally evaluated at 18, 24, and 48 months of age. On the first two occasions, the subjects´ vocabulary and grammar skills were assessed through both forms of the IDHC. Simultaneously, a spontaneous speech sample was collected and lexical and grammar measures were also derived. At 48 months of age two standardized measures, one of general cognitive abilities (WPPSI-R) and another of receptive and expressive language (RDLS-III) were obtained. Results show strong concurrent and longitudinal correlations between scores obtained through the reduced and the complete IDHC forms. Also, high and significant indexes of concurrent and short-term validity of our parent reports, as measured through the correlations with spontaneous language measures, were found. Nevertheless, a higher predictive value of vocabulary over syntax was observed. Finally, specific relations were found between early parent report, spontaneous language measures and later Verbal IQ scores. However, stronger associations were found between lexical development at 24 months and receptive and expressive language scores two years later. In particular, IDHC´s vocabulary score made a unique and significant contribution to explain children?s later expressive language level, even after controlling for language comprehension at the same age
