Resumen:
The MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDI) is a method of assessing communicative skills in infants and young children by means of parental reports. The ease of administration has made it feasible for the first time to study language development in large samples. Several new phenomena have been described, in particular by the group around Liz Bates, which appear to be very robust. The instruments have during the past 12 years been translated and adapted to over 30 different languages or cultures. This symposium focuses on how robust several of these phenomena are by systemizing data from eleven different languages and cultures and relating them to US data. Robustness across language is required for all candidates of language universals.
