The aim of the present proposal is to initiate a research collaboration between the two research groups lead by Prof. László Szilágyi and Prof. Oscar Varela. It is expected that the joint effort will be of mutual benefit for the participants and the aims of the individual groups will be more efficiently achieved through this collaboration than separately. This is due to the complementary nature of the individual competences and experiences of the two teams in saccharide structure, function and reactivity. Novel di-(or tri-)saccharide structures with S-containing interglycosidic linkages will be synthesized. Such structures are of interest because of altered electronic and steric properties, molecular shape/conformation with respect to the natural glycosides and are, therefore, potential enzyme inhibitors. The molecular structures and conformations of the new derivatives will be determined using advanced NMR spectroscopic techniques. We intend to disclose our results at international conferences and publish them in leading journals of the field.
