Resumen:
The application of stevia glycosides in the food industry has grown steadily in the lasttwo decades. Besides the use of stevia constituents as natural sweeteners, increasingattention has been given to their potential therapeutic applications and health benefits.Although in some cases clinical studies have been realized (prominently, to investigateits hypoglycemic and antihypertensive activity) some of them have failed to cover theexpectations from preclinical investigations. Here, we review current knowledge onstevia constituents? pharmacokinetics (both in rodents and in humans) and some of themost profusely investigated potential medical / health-related, i.e. diabetes andmetabolic syndrome, hypertension, antimicrobial and anticancer activity. The outcomeof available clinical studies and the perspectives of Stevia therapeutic use arediscussed in connection with pharmacokinetics knowledge.
