Early cinema must be considered in relationship to the visual culture of its time and no study of this period can ignore the diverse cultural phenomena that interacted with it and which, in more than one instance,contributed to the medium´s configuration long before the emergence of the technological conditions that made it possible. This essay explores the interconnections between photography and early cinema and argues that the positive reception of the latter in Latin America was the result of the reading competencies, representational codes, and thematic and aesthetic fashions already internalized by spectators in the fifty-year history of photography.
