Resumen:
In Argentina 4 out 5 incoming university students abandon their studies in the first year of college. This is a very difficult educational and social problem with other negative consequences: high delay and drop out rate, which result in a very low rate of graduation. The Physics Department of Engineering School at UNSJ has offered since 2007 a remedial course trying to minimize this problem. This course is offered in the semester following the regular course to those students that failed it. The remedial course follows the same traditional approach to teaching and it is a repetition of regular Physics I (Mechanics) courses. Before 2010, the results were disappointing, with just a small number of students getting passing marks. Since that year, the approach to teaching was changed with the introduction of two active learning teaching strategies: Tutorials for Introductory Physics and Interactive Lecture Demonstrations. The results show a significant improvement in both the conceptual learning and the degree of success, which now is around 85% in comparison to the 27% of previous years.
