Resumen:
The present study intends to determine the effect of sauroine (1), the main alkaloid obtained from Huperzia saururus (Lam.) Trev. on memory retention and learning. To evaluate this, electrophysiological experiments and behavioral tests (step down) were performed. Results show that 1 improves memory retention in the step-down test, significantly increasing hippocampal plasticity. Thus, 1 seems to be one of the compounds responsible for the H. saururus activity claimed in folk medicine.
