Resumen:
The high fat diet promotes hypercholesterolemia associated with seminal / sperm alterations reversed by the addition of virgin olive oil. Adult rabbits showed a decrease in seminal volume approaching 30 %, without changes in pH, after 12 months of feeding with grease added to balanced feed for rabbits. When extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) was also added to the feed pellets, the seminal volume began to recover. It is known that most of the volume corresponds to the secretion of the main accessory sex glands. Both seminal alterations and their reversal could be caused by deficiencies / recovery in the glands attached to the male reproductive system. This led us to advance in the structural, ultrastructural and physiological analysis of the seminal vesicles and prostate complex as well as. Adult male rabbits weighing 2 kg were fed a standard balanced diet (Geepsa SA) or a balanced diet soaked with 14% oil (w/w) from melted bovine fat until the serum cholesterol level was twice the basal condition; or a combination of this bovine oil (grease, 7%) and EVOO (7%), sequentially applied to mitigate the negative effect (figure 1). Samples from animals of all conditions were processed: serum (cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose) and semen (volume, pH) were checked monthly; and tissue samples (liver, seminal vesicles and prostate) were obtained after the cholesterol concentration reached levels of double or a mid-point reduction of the basal . The epithelium of the seminal vesicles and prostate showed some changes, specifically markers of increased intracellular cholesterol or accumulation of cytoplasmic granules Morphometric measurements are useful to evaluate the negative effect of fat diet and the recovery by olive oil, such as epithelial height . It is interesting to note that this alteration appeared around 12 months or more of fat consumption, and theaddition of EVOO to the diet promoted a slow morphological recovery compared to the seminal volume.
