Esta Ciudad Vieja permaneció llena de escombros por más de dos décadas, tanto que fue llamada "el Barrio de las Ruinas" y se lo asoció con la barbarie de la tierra, con la herencia española. La civilización, era en oposición, la imitación de los modelos europeos. Si la barbarie era la irracionalidad, por oposición lo nuevo sería la racionalidad, la civilización. Pueblo Nuevo, Ciudad Nueva o Nueva Ciudad son términos equivalentes para designar a la ciudad posterremoto: la ciudad civilizada. The Old City remained full of rubble for more than two decades, while it was called the "Neighborhood of the Ruins" and was associated with the barbarity of the earth, with the Spanish heritage. The civilization was in opposition, imitating European models. If it was barbaric irrationality, as opposed what would be the new rationality, civilization. New Town or New City are equivalent terms to designate the city posterremoto: the civilized city. Key words: Old City-new city-civilization-barbarism-nineteenth century
