Resumen:
(−)-Epicatechin (EC) ameliorated alterations in the activation of the insulin-triggered signalling cascade in adipose and liver tissues of high-fat fed mice. In this work, we studied the effects of EC on heart and skeletal muscle mitochondrial function of high-fat fed mice. Male mice were fed for 15 w with diets containing 10% total calories from fat (C), 60% total calories from fat (HF), C diet added with EC to provide 20 mg EC/kg body (CE), and HF diet plus same amount of EC (HFE). Body weight and glycemia values were higher in HF than in C, even when the caloric intake was similar. EC did not modify those parameters. Skeletal muscle (gastrocnemius) and heart relative weights were similar in the 4 groups. Mitochondrial respiratory complexes I-III, II-III, and IV activities were increased in skeletal muscle of HF mice (30%, 40% and 40% respectively; p
