The state 4/state 3 transition regulates mitochondrial nitric oxide synthase activity

The state 4/state 3 transition regulates NO release from coupled mitochondria. In liver mitochondria, NO release, in nmol/min.mg protein was 1.32-1.36 in state 4 and 0.71-0.73 in state 3; and in kidney mitochondria the values were 0.54-0.76 in state 4 and 0.32-0.42 in state 3. The state 4/state 3 transition regulates NO production by the transition of mitochondrial membrane potential and not of intramitochondrial pH.
