Resumen:
Leishmaniasis isa parasitic disease caused by over 20 Leishmania speciestransmitted by sand flies. It affects mainly poor people in tropical andsubtropical regions of the world. Only a few drugs, with an unfavourableadverse effects profile, are available for its treatment. Sesquiterpene lactones (STL) aresecondary metabolites mainly present in Asteraceae species with several biological activities reportedsuch as antiparasitic.   The aim of this work wasto assess the activity of the STLs eupatoriopicrin, estafietin, eupahakonenin B and minimolide isolated from Stevia maimarensis, Stevia alpina, Stevia gilliesiiand Mikaniaminima, respectivelyagainst Leishmania(L.) amazonensis promastigotes and amastigotes and to evaluatetheir cytotoxicity against mammaliancells (macrophages).
