Resumen:
AbstractBackground: Urera aurantiaca is an Argentinean species that has been traditionally used to treat symptoms ofinfammation. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the anti-infammatory and antioxidant efects oftwo specimens of Urera aurantiaca obtained in the provinces of Salta and Misiones, which are two diferent geographicalareas of Argentina. Methods: The anti-infammatory activity of the extracts was tested in LPS-stimulated macrophages through theDPPH radical scavenging activity, the SOD-like activity, the reducing power and the inhibition of lipid peroxidation. The anti-infammatory activity was also evaluated by the inhibition of albumin denaturation and proteinase inhibitoryaction tests. The total polyphenols, favonoids and tannins content were quantifed. Results: Both extracts were able to reduce the augmented NO release in LPS-activated macrophages and showedantioxidant and in vitro anti-infammatory activities. The polyphenols content was higher in the extract obtained fromthe specimen from Salta than in that obtained in Misiones. This fnding accounts for the higher anti-infammatory andantioxidant properties obtained with the former. Conclusion: The diferences in chemical composition and the biological activities observed between the extracts areprobably related to the diferent environmental conditions found in both provinces. Keywords: Urera aurantiaca, Infammation, Antioxidant activity, Macrophages, Polyphenols
