The 3rd Latin American Symposium on Environmental Virology, organized by the Laboratorio de Aguas y Suelos (LAgS, Laboratory of Water and Soils, at INIQUI, CONICET-UNSa) is taking place at Universidad Nacional de Salta (UNSa), in Salta, Argentina. Previous events in this series were held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 2010 and Salto (Uruguay) in 2013.The aims of this meeting are to bring together researchers from Latin America to discuss advances and emerging topics in Environmental Virology, to stimulate the inception of new projects, and to encourage collaboration between institutions to reinforce research in the field.From the very beginning the topics in the conference series included viruses in water and food, increasingly in combination with microbial risk assessment. However, on this occasion we decided to expand the scope to include also air-borne viruses and viruses transmitted by vectors associated with water. It is a first step towards considering the full environment, defined from a human perspective, as all that surrounds human beings.
