Resumen:
Abstract: Un método paradeterminar la tenacidad a la fractura en testigos de corona considerandopresión en las caras de la fractura.Inthis work we describe a novel simple method for the determination of rockfracture toughness (KIC), which is amenable for extending to reservoirconditions. To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first ever applicationof pressure on the crack faces for the measurement of KIC in rocks. The present method allows for faster and moreextensive measurements of KIC than current alternatives. We first describe theconception of the method, suitable for application in core samples. Then wedescribe the design and construction of the testing rig. Finally, we show the applicationand delineate further improvements. The present method is a step forwardtowards a more widespread use of the physically meaningful parameter KIC, in lieu of phenomenological frackability indexes. These indexes are usually regarded as containing limited value, and they oftenprovide opposite conclusions to each other.
