Resumen:
Fly ash, a coal combustion residue produced by Termotasajero in Colombia, has been hydrothermally treated to produce zeolite without addition of silicon or aluminium. The sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) and physisorption by N2 adsorption/desorption. The prepared material consisted of a mixture of zeolite X and zeolite A of high surface area and an Fe content of 6 % wt/wt. The zeolite (0.5 gr/l) was used as catalyst for the Fenton-like oxidation of Orange II. Experiments were performed in a laboratory batch reactor at 70oC and pH=3, with the stoichiometric requirement of H2O2. Good mineralization (50%), high peroxide conversions (90%) and complete decolorization with low Fe leaching were obtained after 4 hs of reaction. Samples were used up to 16 hs with acceptable stability
