Resumen:
Tan spot caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis is an economically important disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Argentina. The success of local programmes breeding for resistance to the disease depends to a large extent on the genetic variation within the pathogen population. To assay variability within the pathogen, 155 isolates of P. tritici-repentis from various localities and cultivars were compared by using isozyme analysis with polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis in three systems: estearase, phosphatase and peroxidase. Analysis by each system showed variation in the number and relative mobility of the bands in the gel of the pathogen population.  Intraspecific polymorphisms were identified and in the most cases, the enzyme patterns of isolates were distinct. Jaccard similarity coefficient demonstrated that intraspecific variability existed both among and within sites. No phenotipic similarities were correlated with geographic origin of the P. tritici-repentis isolates
