Resumen:
The presence of toxic heavy metals in contaminated streams, arising from the discharge of untreated effluent is one of the most important environmental issue. The aplication of traditional treatment techniques implies a high cost and a continuous input of chemicals which cause further environmental damage. The high level of sulfation of the polysaccharides from polysiphonia nigrescens suggets that this cheap red seaweed could be used as an important biomass for removing heavy metals.
