Resumen:
Due to its high toxicity, the chromium must be removed from the sewage that contains it before it is discharged into the aquifers. Using discontinuous (in batch) remediation techniques with the platanus hispanic achene biomass it is possible to remove the contaminant at laboratory scale. The method is of very low environmental and economic impact. The retention mechanism of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) was determined for its industrial applicability. The concentration of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) was determined by UV Vis spectrophotometry with 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DFC) at 540 nm. The chromium species attached to the surface of the biomaterial were analyzed by electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The results evidenced the presence of intermediary Cr(V) species bound to the surface of the material. It was also shown that the final species on the surface of the sorbent contain trivalent chromium.
