Resumen:
The isomerization-cracking of long paraffins for the production of branched isoparaffins of high octane number was studied.  The reaction was performed in batch mode using Pt/tungsten-zirconia (Pt/WZ) and Pt/sulfate-zirconia (Pt/SZ) catalysts.  n-hexadecane was used as model feedstock and the reaction was performed at 225 ºC and 10 atm.  Activation conditions were varied in order to optimize the activity and selectivity of the catalyst.  The final target process property was the total isoparaffins yield.  The activation condition varied was the temperature of calcination of the support.  The catalysts have different behaviors regarding the calcination temperatura.  Higher temperaturas decrease the Pt/SZ activity and improve its selectivity towards isoparaffins.  In Pt/WZ, activity and selectivity to isoparaffins are maximum when calcining at 800 ºC.  The selectivity to isoparaffins is closely related to the Brönsted/Lewis ratio of the acid surface sites.  High Lewis relative concentrations favor cracking while Brönsted sites abundance favor isomerization.  n-C16 transformation over Pt/WZ800 yields high octane short paraffins and mildly branched C16 isomers suitable as diesel pour point depressants.
