Resumen:
The hydrogen used as a fuel in the PEMFC system generated from the reforming of alcohols or hydrocarbons followed by the water gas shift reaction. The CO concentration, in this hydrogen-rich stream, varies between 0.5 and 2%, but must be less than 10 ppm in order not to deteriorate the cell anode. The CO preferential oxidation (COPrOx) is an adequate method to reduce the CO concentration. However, while most studies have been performed using powder catalysts, it is generally admitted that structured catalysts are necessary in this type of reactions for practical applications.A variety of catalyst formulations have been tested for the COPrOx reaction. Supported noble metals (Pt, Au) and the copper?ceria system are the most active and selective catalysts so far reported in the open literature [1]. The incorporation of the oxides to supports with high surface could improve the dispersion of the active phase. In this vein, the mesoporous materials offer large surface area, pore diameter > 5 nm and thick wall thickness, which gives them mechanical and hydrothermal stability [2].
