Resumen:
Studying a University carreer demands an effort in many ways: time investment, economical outcome, and extended dedication. Certain obstacles can often emerge in the way, not being the same for women and for men. We aimed to know the rate of performance of university students at a Genetics course, and the particular causes, both separated by gender. A 7-year collection of data included number of registered students, and number of students who did not pass the course, both separated by gender. The variation (percentages) of performance did not show any tendency or relationship between the two series of male and female data. Then, we run a survey among some of the students who did not pass the course, asking them about the reason they think that brought them to a failure situation. The 42% of the women consulted referred to children care and family attendance problems, while more than the half of men said they failed passing the exams. We conclude that a masking of different situations outside the university environment, interfere with the performance, even when the whole numbers of success/failure are similar for men and women.
