Resumen:
SUMMARY.The Academies of Sciences and their function in societyThe National Academies are entities composed of recognized specialists representing the sciences, letters, and arts, whose objective is to intensify the study, research and exercise of these disciplines. On the other hand, an Academy of Sciences is an institution whose function is to promote scientific research through the organization of meetings to exchange ideas and discuss various aspects related to science, technology and scientific progress. Another no less important purpose is to publicize the point of view of science in matters of critical interest to society. Because of the characteristics of the Academies, and especially because of their pluralist nature, they should intervene assiduously in educational policies that need to be constant, independent and projected into the future, beyond partisan politics. However, with few exceptions, the Academies of our country are mostly relegated to the role of simple repositories of knowledge instead of acting as advisers to public and private entities and focusing on the resolution of specific problems, as occurs in developed countries. After a brief historical description of the Academies of Sciences, in this document we will try to analyze the activities carried out by the main Academies of Sciences of the developed countries, examining the similarities and differences between them and the Academies of our country.
