Resumen:
The
family Palpimanidae is a small assemblage of spiders recognized by the
coriaceous carapace, haplogyne genitalia, two spinnerets and especially, by the
first pair of legs having dorsally enlarged femora and greatly developed prolateral
scopula on tibia, metatarsus and tarsus. Palpimanids do not construct any sort
of web snare, living mainly in the leaf litter of the tropical and subtropical
forests, although several genera are known from dry habitats. Araneophagy was
reported for many species. Palpimanids belong to the superfamily Palpimanoidea,
a superfamily with diffuse limits, which may include certain families with very
diverse morphology and habits. Nevertheless, there is no doubt of the close
relationships between Palpimanidae, Stenochilidae and Huttoniidae. Three
subfamilies are recognized (Palpimaninae, Chediminae and Otiothopinae), of
which Otiothopinae is the only recorded in the New World. Fifteen genera were
described in all the World (with 127 species), from which three genera (with
six species) are known from Argentina. One additional species placed in Palpimanus
is of doubtful procedence.
