Concrete is a complex material. The numerical modelling of the non‐linear behaviourobserved
in experimental laboratory tests on concrete samples is still nowadays
an active field of research. In this presentation, the main properties
characterizing this material are analyzed. The general procedure related
with the development of a constitutive model, as well as the main
objectives that such a model should achieve are discussed. Diverse
approaches based on different theories and observation levels for the
numerical modelling of the failure and mechanical behaviour of concrete
are briefly described. In particular, a constitutive formulation based
on the flow theory of plasticity and on fracture mechanics and
considering concrete quality as a fundamental parameter is presented.
Then, the main features of Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC), a concrete
in which some or all of the coarseaggregates are replaced by
recycled aggregates obtained from the crushing of waste concrete are
presented and an extension of the previously described approach for the
particular case of RAC is also exposed. Finally, the validation of the
proposed constitutive model is made by comparing experimental results
with numerical predictions, demonstrating the good capabilities of the
proposed formulation.
