In its more than one century of existence, cinema, an art for the masses, has played a central role in the construction of identities and imaginations as well as in the consolidation of value systems, behaviour patterns and ways of life in societies around the world. Whether they support, question or omit mentioning the institutional powers, films are tightly linked to the political contexts within which they are produced and distributed. One could argue that every film tells us something about its social and political environment and is fit, therefore, for this kind of reading. However, this essay will restrict our its perspective to a specific tendency in Argentine cinema whose themes and/or models of production, representation and distribution have political and social connotations.
