Resumen:
Essential oil (EO) represents an interesting antimicrobial alternative to antibiotics, however, stability and water solubility represent an issue to be considered EO for potentialapplications. In this sense, we developed two types of hydrosoluble formulations bases onSchinus areira EO: liposomal formulations of phosphatidylcholine (DMPC and DPPC) withencapsulated EO; and green silver nanoparticles using EO as a reducing and stabilizingbiocomposite. The size and charges of formulations were characterized by dynamic lightscattering and microscopy experiments. In the case of liposomal formulations, chemicalcomposition and encapsulation efficiency were also determined. Furthermore, antimicrobial activity studies against Gram-positive and Gram-negative model bacteriawere carried out for both formulations. Based on the results obtained, it was proven that itis feasible to encapsulate S. areira EO in multilamellar liposomes of phosphatidylcholinewith high efficiency. DPPC liposomes have proved to be a better encapsulation systemretaining more monoterpenes from EO and therefore present antimicrobial activity againstS. aureus. On the other hand, it was possible to obtain green silver nanoparticles by usingS. areira EO as a reducing and stabilizing agent, which has shown antimicrobial activityagainst S. aureus and E. coli at low concentrations of EO. These facts show the feasibilityof obtaining hidrosoluble formulations with antimicrobial potential from a natural resourcewith local impact
