Resumen:
Carcinogenesis is a complex multistep process. Three stages of carcinogenesis are described: initiation, promotion and progression. The understanding of these stages and the factors involved in them is very important for the development of biomarkers that allow early diagnosis, and also to know the stage of tumor development. If these factors are modificable such as those related to the diet, environmental factors, certain habits, etc., they can be reduced or avoided in susceptible individuals. For oral cancer, as for other cancers, recent studies described genetic and epigenetic factors related to the development of tumors and they can be used for the development of biomarkers to perform diagnosis or to know the stage of the disease. In addition, many articles studied the effects associated to tobacco, alcohol and betel nut, agents studied for many years by their relationship with oral cancer. This article describes the different stages of cancer development and shows specific examples of recent works about oral cancer and salivary gland cancer.
