Resumen:
In Argentina feeds are an important component in modern animal agriculture, but little information on the influence of feed processing on the mycobiota and the incidence of ochratoxin A in poultry feed is available. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of mycoflora into pelleted and non pelleted feed, and to evaluate the OTA feed incidence. Moreover, the ability to produce OTA by strains of Aspergillus spp. was investigated. A total of 50 samples of poultry feed were analyzed. Total fungal counts were determined in DRBC and xerophilic fungi in DG18. The ochratoxin A was quantified by HPLC. The fungal total count was lower than 1 x 104 CFU/g in both culture media. In 100% of the pelletized samples Aspergillus spp. and Eurotium spp. were isolated whereas Fusarium spp. were isolated from all non pelletized samples. Aspergillus flavus was the most prevalent. The 43% of A. niger strains were ochratoxicogenic. Detectable levels of OTA in both kind of feed were found. The presence of OTA in pig feed must be inspected and practices of processing and storage must be investigated to establish the toxicological risk in feed for poultry production.
