Resumen:
This work aims to study the effects of urea,glycerol and their mixture as plasticizers for cassavastarch films, regarding their impact on the materialstructure, water susceptibility, barrier and mechanicalproperties. All plasticizers were compatible with starchbasedmatrices, without detecting migration at theplasticizers level tested. In general water relatedproperties were not affected. Plasticizer-polymerinteractions as well as those involving water moleculeswere evidenced by ATR-FTIR spectra. Urea resulted themost efficient plasticizer, since it lowers glass transitiontemperature values and enhances mechanical properties.The co-plasticization of the starch films with glycerol andurea mixture resulted in poorer mechanical performance,though with higher light absorption which is relevantconsidering the potential film applications as mulchingfunctionalized cover material.
