In search of systems that form cyclic motifs linked by intermolecular hydrogen bonds, we focused our attention on imidazo[1,2-a]imidazoles and its monobenzo derivative. Thesecompounds, formally derived from pentalene, can form dimers both in the solid state and in solution. Parent imidazo[1,2-a]imidazole has only one annular tautomer but imidazo[1,2-a]benzimidazole can exist in two tautomeric forms depending if the proton is on the imidazole or on the benzimidazole ring. .
