Resumen:
A regional climate model was used to study interactions between soil moisture and precipitation/evaporation during the South American Monsoon System (SAMS) of 1992-93. The coupling between soil moisture and evapotranspiration as well as precipitation is found to be large over the La Plata Basin. A temporal lag correlation study suggests causality between soil moisture and precipitation over some sub-regions in the Basin. Full interaction with the land surface favours (inhibits) extreme precipitation over Uruguay (Argentina). Extreme precipitation events are proceeded by increased soil moisture heterogeneity.
