Pressurized Liquid Extraction for the Recovery of Bioactive Compounds from Seaweeds for Food Industry Application: A Review

Seaweeds areanunderutilizedfoodintheWesternworld,buttheyarewidelyconsumedin Asia,withChinabeingtheworld?slargerproducer.Seaweedshavegainedattentioninthefood industryinrecentyearsbecauseoftheircomposition,whichincludespolysaccharides,lipids,proteins,dietaryfiber,andvariousbioactivecompoundssuchasvitamins,essentialminerals,phenoliccompounds, andpigments.Extractiontechniques,rangingfrommoretraditionaltechniquessuchas macerationtonoveltechnologies,arerequiredtoobtainthesecomponents.Pressurizedliquidextraction (PLE)isagreentechniquethatuseshightemperaturesandpressureappliedinconjunctionwith asolventtoextractcomponentsfromasolidmatrix.Toimprovetheefficiencyofthistechnique,differentparameterssuchasthesolvent,temperature,pressure,extractiontimeandnumberofcyclesshould becarefullyoptimized.ItisimportanttonotethatPLEconditionsallowfortheextractionoftargetanalytesinashort-timeperiodwhileusinglesssolventandmaintainingahighyield.Moreover,the combinationofPLEwithothertechniqueshasbeenalreadyappliedtoextractcompoundsfromdifferentmatrices,includingseaweeds.Inthisway,thecombinationofPLE-SFE-CO2 seems tobethe bestoptionconsideringboththehigheryieldsobtainedandtheeconomicfeasibilityofascaling-up approximation.Inaddition,thefoodindustryisinterestedinincorporatingthecompoundsextracted fromedibleseaweedsintofoodpackaging(includingediblecoating,bioplasticsandbio-nanocomposites incorporatedintobioplastics),foodproductsandanimalfeedtoimprovetheirnutritional profileandtechnologicalproperties.ThisreviewattemptstocompileandanalyzethecurrentdataavailableregardingtheapplicationofPLEinseaweedstodeterminetheuseofthisextraction techniqueasamethodtoobtainactivecompoundsofinterestforfoodindustryapplication
