Resumen:
The austral species of genus Paspalum L. (Poaceae: Panicoideae: Paniceae) are revised as a whole for the first time. One hundred and thirty species are treated in this work, including nearly 500 synonyms. Paspalum includes annual or perennial species that grow in open areas or along rivers and streams. The plant possess membranous ligules, leaves lanceolate to filiform, inflorescences with spikelets arranged in unilateral branches, the spikelets are plano-convex or concavo-convex, ranging from pilose, in different degrees of pubescence, to glabrous; although the lower glume is usually absent, it can be found in several species; the upper glume and lower lemma are subequal, 3- to 7-nerved; the lower palea and lower flower are usually absent; the upper anthecium varies from membranous to indurate, and all species have a basic chromosome number of x = 10. A key to the species is provided, together with a discussion of previous infrageneric classifications and relationships of the genus; morphological descriptions, illustrations are also presented, together with new synonymy and lectotipification of many names.    Keywords: Taxonomy, South America, Poaceae, Panicoideae, Paspalum.
