Resumen:
Phytoplankton response to climate change variables such as increased temperature, ultraviolet radiation and ocean acidification as single experimental factors has been widely studied. Single factor experiments provided us with useful data on the negative or positive effects of climate change variable and on the acclimatory and adaptive potential of phytoplankton. As we begin to appreciate the complexity of global change issues affecting phytoplankton such as increased wind stress, cloudiness, higher dissolved organic matter inputs into water bodies there is a heightened interest in determining the effects of combinations of climate and global change variables. Under this more complicated scenario, antagonistic versus synergistic interactions need to be considered. Here we explore the synergistic and antagonistic responses of phytoplankton in a variety ofenvironments: tropical versus temperate, freshwater versus oceanic, mixed versus static to determine whether there are patterns that can be clearly discerned.
