Resumen:
Aquatic ecosystems cover more than 70% of our planet. They produceabout the same amount of biomass as all terrestrial ecosystems taken together, andthey absorb about 90% of the anthropogenically produced heat. They take up alarge amount of the emitted CO2 and transport it to the deep ocean, thus curbingglobal climate change. Aquatic producers and consumers are under the effect ofmultiple stressors such as rising temperature, acidification and UV radiation.Pollution is a major stress factor affecting all aquatic ecosystems including fresh, coastal and open ocean waters. The main pollutants are oil spills, persistant organicpollutants, fertilizers and pharmaceuticals which reach the hydrosphere by terrestrial runoff. Toxic chemicals and heavy metals have long been dumped into theoceans affecting marine life such as invertebrates and vertebrates. A more recentadvent is the growing pollution by microplastics.
