Resumen:
Predaceous midges of the genus Paryphoconus Enderlein are medium-sized to large (female wing lengths 1.5-7 mm) exclusively inhabiting the Neotropical region. It includes 40 species, of which only are known the pupa of P. mayeri Wirth, P. flavidus (Johannsen) and P. oliveirai Lane, the first two very incompletely described. The purpose of this presentation is to fully describe the pupa of Paryphconus aemulus Macfie from material obtained during a recent survey of immatures of Ceratopogonidae in the Amazon river near Manaus, Brazil. The pupa of Paryphconus aemulus was collected with pippete from macrophyte plants (Salvinia auriculata Aubl. Fam. Salviniaceae) (Fig.) in Ilha da Marchantaria, Município de Iranduba, Amazonas. The material containing the pupa was transported to the laboratory in a vial with a drop of water. Observations were done daily, until adult emergence. The pupa of P. aemulus is distinguished from the one of P. oliveirai, a species also occurring in Manaus, by its smaller length (6.00 mm in P. oliveirai) the vl represented by a pore (with thin seta in P. oliveirai), all setae of pupa well visibly and weaker than in P. oliveirai, the anterior margin of the operculum slightly curved (pointed in P. oliveirai) and the apicolateral processes with their apical 1/3 not pigmented. The pupa of P. mayeri is slightly larger (4.3 mm) than P. aemulus, but exhibits 3 dl setae (2 in P. aemulus).
