Resumen:
AIMS: Evaluate the effect of novel practical oxygen therapy methodology on neonatal pigletssurvival under commercial farm conditions.METHODS: Piglets from hyperprolific sows presenting asphyxia, n= 109 (classified using anadjusted APGAR score) or very low birth weight n= 112 (less than 1,05 Kg) were selected for thestudy. Treated animals (n=55 piglets of very low birth weight and n= 57 presenting asphyxia)25 received oxygen therapy immediately after birth. According to a strategic protocol, 100% oxygeninhalation was achieved using a specially designed device. Physiological ( peripheral blood oxygensaturation at birth, five minutes and 24 hours after birth, glucose and temperature at birth and 24hours later) and production parameters (weight at birth, 24 hours and 21 days of life andpreweaning mortality), as well as individual colostrum intake were measured.30 RESULTS: A significant treatment effect on peripheral blood oxygen saturation levels wasobserved (p=0.013 and p
