Resumen:
Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis is the key system that, through a complex network that involves different neuropeptides, neurotransmitters, and pituitary hormones, regulates reproduction in vertebrates. Considering its early establishment in life, the main goal of this work is to gather information on its development and the physiological actions of its components during early life stages. This review will be focused on fish, because their neuroanatomical characteristics make them excellent models to study neuroendocrine systems. The following points are discussed: i) developmental functions of neuroendocrine components of this network, and ii) disruptions in development that may impact in adult reproduction. Given the importance of the components of this network, and that they can be altered by external/internal signals affecting their specific early functions and/or the establishment of the reproductive axis, more studies are necessary to understand this complex and dynamic network.
